Hello! This morning I flew from London to Brussels, where I was picked up and shuttled to Maastricht. I was really nervous all day, but I had a good breakfast at the airport (or as good as I could) and tried my best to relax.
When I got to Brussels, I found the group that I was with and immediately started talking to people about their travels and where they were from. Everyone had relatively smooth travels, save for one whose flight was delayed by a few hours. By the time we got from Brussels to Maastricht, we had all made at least a few friends on the bus, and we were all eager to get inside and relax for a bit. We had a small welcome session, then we all headed to our rooms. My first view out of my window gave me a beautiful rainbow, which I took as a good sign for the rest of the semester.
We got to go to the local grocery store to grab things for the week, and I ended up cooking with a friend I made on the bus. We all slept so so well that evening.
The next day we took a full tour of Maastricht and saw more of campus, where all our classes would be. We saw the library and all of the beautiful streets and architecture. We stopped for lunch and had our first pieces of vlaai (pie) and then got to go on a boat tour on the river Maas, and go to the Zonneberg Caves! The caves were so fascinating. They were once used to mine limestone for construction, then were used as an attempt at an evacuation area (which didn’t quite work out). Later in the evening, my friends and I decided to attend a beer & wine festival they were having near the river. We stopped in a photobooth that ended up scaring us and taking a beautiful photo right as we were all shocked. Halfway through the evening it started to rain, but we all made the best of it and had a good time. It was a wonderful evening getting to know lots of new friends and exploring the wonderful city we are studying in!
So far, I love the city and I can’t wait to get to know it better!
